Though they promised freedom, I was caged inside of evangelicalism.
I wasn’t free to have questions.
I wasn’t free to have doubts.
I wasn’t free to have thoughts.
They were to be taken captive.
I wasn’t free to be myself, to accept myself, to know myself.
They kept saying “you’re free here, and those outside are in bondage.”
I’ve since learned the chains are from inside the faith that says you are wicked, dead in your sins.
Of course we can’t live, truly live under those dehumanizing beliefs.
Outside their toxic teachings is where I finally found true, authentic freedom.
